The seminar addressed the evolution of human rights protection and monitoring systems, the importance of supplier integration, the rationalization of controls, and standards such as SA8000, ISO 20400, and PAS 24001.
If you were asked whether human rights are protected in your company, you would answer: “Certainly, 100%!” But would you be equally sure in answering about your entire supply chain?
This was the central subject of the seminar held by the Community Open-ES on October 11, 2024, titled “Human Rights: Actions, Supply Chain, and Monitoring Tools” as part of the program “Open-Es ESG Skills: The Community meets the experts”.
The presentations illustrated how systems for the protection and monitoring of human rights have evolved over time.
SA8000: In recent years, corporate social responsibility has progressed significantly, moving from the adoption of standards like SA8000 to the implementation of responsible sourcing practices and ESG monitoring. For example, SA8000 requires certified companies to manage suppliers, including sustainability clauses in contracts and conducting audits on high-risk suppliers.
Integration of second and third-tier suppliers: Companies recognize the importance of involving suppliers from the beginning, using questionnaires and webinars to improve collaboration and manage risks along the supply chain.
Rationalization of controls: With the spread of monitoring programs, the need to optimize controls to avoid duplication has arisen, leading to the creation of platforms like SEDEX and AIM PROGRESS.
ISO 20400 and responsible sourcing: Introduced in 2017, ISO 20400 is the first international standard on best practices for responsible sourcing, promoting purchases with positive effects on the environment, society, and the economy.
PAS 24000: Published in 2022, PAS 24000 defines the requirements for a Social Management System and social performance criteria, applicable to all organizations.
Awareness and improvement: Currently, monitoring and audits are accompanied by training and engagement to achieve lasting results, through initiatives that offer self-assessment tools and discussion opportunities.
Due diligence obligations: In 2024, Italy will adopt the CSRD Directive, introducing reporting obligations on sustainability due diligence processes and managing negative impacts.
ESG skills: ESG skills are essential to comply with regulations and obtain certifications, highlighting human rights, monitoring tools, and opportunities for companies.
Finally, a self-assessment questionnaire on the positioning of each company regarding human rights was presented to the community members. The Human Rights assessment within a company is crucial to monitor and evaluate the impact of its operations and practices on the respect and protection of human rights.
